Snowy Sunrise Elopement at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park

Winter wedding at Rocky Mountain National Park, Dream Lake

One of the many perks of hiring a local elopement photographer? Knowing exactly what “fall weather” actually means in the Colorado high country. (Spoiler: it might mean golden leaves and crisp air, or it might mean snow before sunrise and gale force winds on a Tuesday).

For this Dream Lake elopement, we got the full fall drama.

We met before dawn while it was still dark out, snowflakes swirling down as we texted backup plan options. Down in Estes Park, it was no big deal, but up above 9,000 feet? Weather changes fast, and it didn’t care about our timeline. But these two were game to roll with it so we stuck to Plan A - sunrise at Dream Lake.

They got ready on opposite sides of their rental truck at the Bear Lake Trailhead, headlights casting a glow while they zipped jackets and fluffed dress layers. First look? Right there in the parking lot, misty breaths in the cold air, lit by nothing but their car headlights and a whole lotta giddy nerves. It was perfect.

Then we hiked. Halfway to Dream Lake, they pulled out a mini cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Cake for breakfast just hits different at 9,000 feet. :) Cake for breakfast is also my love language…and yes of course they brought me my own so I immediately cried and dug in.

Dream Lake was windy (shocker), but the kind of beautiful chaos that makes everything feel even more cinematic because you’re just holding on to your partner and laughing because the wind is SOOO dramatic. The clouds lit up with wild pinks and golds, swirling over the peaks while we took portraits and let the moment sink in. No one else around. Just wind, snow, and sunrise.

After hiking back down, we stopped at Bear Lake where they pulled out their phones to copy their vows into custom vow books they’d brought along. Sitting on a snow covered benches, bundled up in layers and taking turns writing with frozen fingers, it felt perfectly intimate and low-key. Not rehearsed, not rushed, just quiet moments leading up to a bigger one.

And then before heading out of the park, we made one final stop at Moraine Park. The light was soft and glowy, the mountains draped in fog and fresh snow, and they cracked open a couple beers they’d brought from home - the good stuff. They signed their marriage license right there, surrounded by elk and silence and the kind of view that makes it all feel unreal and truly Colorado.

If you're dreaming about a Rocky Mountain National Park elopement, know this: Colorado in the fall is unpredictable, but wildly worth it. Whether you're hiking to an alpine lake at sunrise, reading vows from a park bench, or sharing cake mid-trail, it all counts. And I promise, it all makes one hell of a story.

Let’s Create Your Perfect Day Together!

I may know Colorado like the back of my hand… not because I grew up here, but because I've spent the last 13 years obsessively exploring every corner of it. The bumpy 4WD roads, the secret alpine lakes, the pull-offs that look unremarkable until you get out of the car and your jaw drops. That's what I bring to your elopement day.

I specialize in the kind of adventures that don't require trekking poles or a training plan. Stunning views, easy access, zero seating charts. Whether you want to elope on a snowy mountain pass, a gondola ride, or literally just outside your Airbnb with the peaks behind you, I'm here for all of it.

You'll get way too many prep guides, a photographer who actually answers texts, and someone who genuinely cares that your day feels real and not like a photoshoot you were forced to survive. Oh and snacks. Always snacks.

Sound like your kind of day? Let's talk!

Why Work With Me?

  • Because you want jaw dropping views without sweating through your wedding clothes.

  • You care more about connection than perfection - you’re up for whatever Colorado weather throws your way because you’ve got your person.

  • You want help from someone who’s actually been here a while (11 years of calling Colorado home and I swear I explore it more than the folks born here).

  • Cookie-cutter isn’t your thing and you want a day that actually feels like you.

  • Planning stuff isn’t always fun BUT having someone walk you through timelines and permits and what shows not to wear on icy trails? Super helpful.

  • Your dog is 100% your family and deserves a front row seat (obvs).

  • You want photos that look like art but feel like you two. Mid laugh, wind blown, in your element.

So yeah, I help plan epic days, create stunning photos, and bring snacks. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect day, I don’t know what does.

Kimberly Crist

Hi, I'm Kimberly 👋

Colorado elopement photographer, snack enthusiast, and your personal hype woman for ditching the traditional wedding entirely.

I spend most of my time wandering dirt roads around Crested Butte, the San Juans, and Denver finding the kind of spots that make you forget what stress even feels like. You know — the ones with the views that hit different at sunrise, where the wildflowers are doing too much, and the only witnesses are a couple of marmots and your dog in a tiny bandana.

If you're dreaming of vows somewhere wildly beautiful with zero seating charts involved, hi. That's literally what I do. You bring the love story. I'll bring the camera, the location ideas, and enough snacks to get us through golden hour.
