Best Places to Elope in Crested Butte with Family

When you’re including loved ones in your elopement, accessibility becomes super important. You don’t typically want to make your ceremony location a 12 mile hike into the backcountry (or maybe you do, IDK, you do you).

Anyways, here are some stunning locations that work well for small groups.

A restaurant/brewery located in downtown Crested Butte, Public House is great for gatherings of any size and offers indoor and outdoor patio spaces for your reception or gathering! How Many Guests Can You Have at a Crested Butte Elopement?

Most elopements fall somewhere between 5 to 15 guests. Outside of that, the land impact starts becoming a concern, especially for locations on National Forest land! Plus, this size keeps your day feeling intimate while still allowing your loved ones to be a part of the experience.

Some ceremony locations have permit or group size limits so definitely check regulations and permits for more information pertaining to your particular location!

    Sunrise Ceremony with Family

4:00 AM — Meet at the Airbnb

The day starts early at your cozy Airbnb. It’ll be early so this time will focus on coffee (lots of coffee!), getting ready, and slowly waking up before heading into the mountains. It’s all about the quiet moments before the adventure begins. We’ll aim to leave around 5:25 AM!

5:45 AM — Arrive at Trailhead

We’ll have a first look a short walk from the parking lot as the sun comes up over the mountains and peaks. Early mornings are always private in CB so we’ll have empty roads, quiet trails, and crisp morning air. After your first look we’ll meander around the trail for some portraits.

6:45 AM — Head Toward the Mountains

After soaking in the sunrise views, we’ll stop at Coffee Lab in Gothic for a for a well deserved breakfast treat!

7:45 AM — Explore the Road Up to Your Ceremony Location

There’s no shortage of locations along the road up to your ceremony location so we’ll stop along the way for portraits, and private vows between just the two of you. This way we’ll be able to chase the best wildflower fields and light!

9:00 AM — Lakeside Ceremony with Family

We’ll meet everyone at the alpine lake, where we’ll get you two married! This is the moment that will feel most like “we’re married!” so soak it in!

After the ceremony we’ll do family photos, a celebratory champagne toast by the lake, and leave time for spontaneous candid moments with loved ones.

11:00 AM — Return to the Airbnb

Back at the Airbnb, we’ll all kick off our shoes, relax, and enjoy the cozy mountain setting. I’ll get photos of snacks, candid moments around the table, and little details.

    12:00 PM — Brunch Celebration

The day wraps up with a casual brunch together! Bagels, cake, coffee, and lots of storytelling about the morning’s adventures. It’s the perfect way to celebrate with family without the stress of a traditional reception.

Crested Butte Elopement With Family Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you have guests at an elopement in Crested Butte?

Yes! Many couples invite 5 to 20 guests which helps keep the day intimate.

Do you need a permit to elope in Crested Butte?

It depends on the location! National Forest land has group limits while venues require reservations. Check with your location or your photographer for the most up to date info on permits - that stuff changes alllll the time.

Can older family members attend a mountain elopement?

Heck yes! So many of the ceremony locations in Crested Butte have easy access from parking areas! You can also stay in a dope Airbnb and just have your ceremony on the land - some of the views from these places are insane.

What should guests wear to a mountain elopement?

Layers are key! Even in the summer the temperature can change quickly between sun and shade - especially at higher elevation in the mountains. Encourage guests to wear comfortable shoes, bring jackets, and be prepared for changing weather. I also have a guide I send to all of my couples that they can then send to their guests that goes over a ton of helpful information!

Where can we celebrate after our ceremony?

The options are endless! If you want a more formal “reception” feeling, many of the restaurants offer private events like Public House, Scarp Ridge Lodge, Bruhaus, Two Twelve, and more. Check the below “What Are Reception or Private Event Location Options in Crested Butte?” for more options!

Is Crested Butte easy for guests to travel to?

Yep! Crested Butte is a 3.5 hour drive from Denver International Airport and takes you through Buena Vista and up over the beautiful newly paved Cottonwood Pass (in the summer when the road is open). When Cottonwood Pass is closed, add on another hour or so as you’ll have to go through Gunnison. There is also the Gunnison-Crested Butte airport (GUC) about 35 minutes south of CB that guests can fly into.

Can we combine an adventure elopement with a family ceremony?

This is actually the most common thing my couples do! We’ll typically do private vows and adventuring first, usually in the morning. Then meet up with family later for a more traditional ceremony and celebration!

Best Time of Year to Elope in Crested Butte with Family

    Summer (June — August)

    • Wildflowers, long daylight hours, easy mountain access. July is peak wildflower season and one of the most popular times to elope and visit Crested Butte! Definitely the best time to elope with family.

    Fall (September – early October)

    • Golden aspens, lots of crowds at peak leaf change, cooler temperatures. Still a good time to elope with family as most roads are still open and activities are available.

    Winter (December – March)

    • Snowy mountain elopements, cozy cabins, skiing and snowboarding. If your guests like the proximity to the ski resort or are into winter activities (xc skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, etc) winter can be a great time of year to elope in Crested Butte with family!

    Spring (April – May)

    • Quiet season with fewer tourists, but mountain roads may still be snowed in. Because it’s off-season, things can generally be cheaper but access and activities are really limited because of weather.

Tips For Planning a Crested Butte Elopement with Family

Planning an elopement with guests is obviously gonna look a little different than a traditional wedding but it can still be just as meaningful!

    choose an Accessible Ceremony Location

The easier access it is to your ceremony location, the happier your guests are gonna be. If you really want to say your vows 3 hours outside of town on top of a mountain pass, my couples do that all the time too with just the two of them - and then meet up with family later!

Give Yourselves Extra Time in Your Timeline

This is something I prepare for in every timeline I build with my couples, even if it’s just the three of us, but having some wiggle room is super important when you’re involving the outdoors. From mountain roads, weather delays, spontaneous pull-offs and stops, coffee and snack breaks - it all adds up!

    Include Activities for Your Family

Whether this is on the day of your wedding or on other days of the trip, planning activities helps make the experience for your guests even more memorable! Plus, Crested Butte has everything from hiking, biking, sightseeing, birding, skiing, and more. Worried about finding something everyone wants to do? I’ve got you covered! In your location guide I send you multiple pins for local activities like horseback riding, 4x4 rentals, snowmobiling, river rafting, and more!

Planning Your Crested Butte Elopement with Family

Whether you’re dreaming of wildflowers, alpine lakes, or mountain views that stretch for miles and miles, Crested Butte is one of the most incredible places in Colorado to elope.

By including your family in the experience, you get to make the day even more meaningful while still keeping the intimate, adventurous spirit of an elopement!

If you’re considered a Crested Butte elopement or intimate wedding with family and want help finding beautiful locations, building a relaxed timeline, and creating a stress free experience, I’d love to help bring your visit to life.

    Kimberly Crist

    Hi hello, I’m Kimberly 👋

I’m a Colorado elopement photographer who spends most of her time helping couples ditch the stress of traditional weddings and get married somewhere wildly beautiful instead. Most of my days are spent exploring places around Crested Butte, Denver, and the San Juans looking for beautiful ceremony spots and chasing good light.

If your wedding day includes dirt roads, wildflowers, sunrise lakes, or your dog in a tiny bandana, we’re probably going to get along great. You bring the vows — I’ll bring the camera, the location ideas, and an unreasonable amount of snacks.
